Oxfam sex scandal: Director promises justice for victims

Oxfam relies on public and corporate donations as well as government funding.

Several senior officials with the worldwide charity have resigned in the wake of the controversy, including the deputy chief executive of Oxfam Great Britain.

He told The Guardian: "The intensity and the ferocity of the attack makes you wonder, what did we do?"

She invited victims to come forward "for justice to be done" for them, saying she was "here for all the women who have been abused".

Eight years later activists in Haiti have learnt that Oxfam - the charity they considered an ally in their cause - was run by men who may have committed similar abuses.

On Friday, Haiti's President said that sexual misconduct by staff of British charity Oxfam was only the tip of an "iceberg" and called for investigations into Doctors without Borders and other aid organizations which came to the country after its 2010 quake.

The executive director of Oxfam, one of the leading global relief organizations in the world, has apologized and asked forgiveness in the wake of allegations that a former director hired prostitutes in disaster zones.

Asked about Evans's allegations, Oxfam said her work had spurred the organization into taking concrete steps to improve the way it deals with "safeguarding" issues.

Smucker officials said this week that the low amounts of the drug found in the station's investigation is not a threat to pets. All of the products on Smucker's retailer recall list had been manufactured at the same manufacturing facility.

But Roland van Hauwermeiren, Oxfam's director in Haiti at the time and one of the three who resigned from the charity, dismissed the allegations.

He also disclosed that one of the men sacked after being accused of using prostitutes was given a job reference from the charity, but it was written by a colleague who was too fired over the allegations. "I never gave her money".

Van Hauwermeiren was moved to Haiti in the wake of the 2010 natural disaster.

The charity has denied a lack of transparency over the Haiti affair, which has prompted a flight of supporters, including actress Minnie Driver and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The 2011 Haiti investigation will be published by the charity with names of witnesses redacted, while the new commission's record of historical cases of sexual misconduct will also be made public.

They are also setting up a global database of accredited referees to ensure sex offenders can not re-offend at other charities, and improving the organisation's "whistleblowing mechanism".

"We need to make sure anyone guilty of such gross misconduct is not able to move between different organisations, exposing more vulnerable people to risk", said Byanyima.
