England were 1-60 at the end of the power-play and looked on track for a score around 200 until Maxwell (3-10) and fellow spinner Ashton Agar put the squeeze on through the middle overs.

On what turned out to be the final ball, the 29-year-old smashed a six over deep mid-wicket to reach his ton and finish the match in style.

Maxwell was pivotal in that with his bowling claiming three key wickets, those of Morgan, top-scorer Dawid Malan and late in the piece David Willey.

That proved the trigger for England to slump badly, as Australia took 6-43 and threatened to skittle the tourists.

England were without four players when they tuned up for the series with a demolition job on the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra, but are looking healthier after a couple of days in Tasmania.
