Kane Williamson an injury doubt for T20I clash against England in Wellington

England gave a decent account of themselves with the bat, Alex Hales racing to 47 and Dawid Malan making a neat 59, but a regular tumble of wickets left them 184 for nine at the close.

It was New Zealand's turn to get off the mark at Westpac Stadium, thanks largely to Martin Guptill (65) and Kane Williamson (72), who helped the hosts post 196-5 batting first.

Williamson's comments come after former New Zealand pace bowler Simon Doull questioned whether the 27-year-old and head coach Mike Hesson should be part of the Black Caps' Twenty20 set-up. England would then need to defeat New Zealand on Sunday and finish with a higher net run-rate overall.

However, spinner Adil Rashid suggested that the Middlesex batsman will likely return to the team for meeting with New Zealand on 13 February.

New Zealand and England are both yet to open their accounts in the ongoing tri-series between them and Australia.

England were without captain Eoin Morgan for the second game in a row, the Dubliner failing to recover from a groin complaint, and made two changes to their attack, with Wood and Yorkshire's Liam Plunkett replacing Tom Curran and Liam Dawson.

"New Zealand's plans have worked, they won the game".

Alex Hales' had scored a century against Sri Lanka in the 2014 World T20 Cup. Williamson along with debutant Chapman continued the run flow.

You can probably run Sea of Thieves on your crummy gaming laptop
One thing that is interesting about this game is the fact that it can run on just about anything. We want to add stuff in that's completely optional and just adds to the fun.

England's stand-in captain Jos Buttler was caught on the long off fence for two by Tim Southee off Sodhi leaving England 109 for four off 12 overs.

Vince played one dreamy lofted cover drive for six then ran as though he was dreaming, taking on Williamson at mid-off and opting not to dive with a direct finding him short.

Newcomers Mark Chapman (20) and Tim Seifert (14 not out) provided the late fireworks on their worldwide debuts.

England needed 48 off the last four overs and David Willey briefly threatened.

'We don't play a huge amount of global Twenty20s and the boys haven't played an bad lot of this game over the last few months so we've got to work out why we're slow in locating the rhythm needed for the shorter game.

A good thing Chapman chipped in too as the premier late innings hitter, Colin de Grandhomme, had gone first ball - spectacularly caught one handed above his head on the long off fence, by Chris Jordan. The weather is likely to be fine and we should see a full game.

'The wicket played a lot better than everyone thought it might.
