It's Red Gerard, White and Blue ... and Gold in slopestyle

The first American medal of the 2018 Olympics belongs to 17-year-old Red Gerard, who won gold in the men's snowboard slopestyle on Sunday morning.

Parrot's score of 87.36 topped all competitors, followed closely by McMorris in second place with 86.83.

Gerard shook Bach's hand, said nice to meet you, and trotted back toward the finish area where the three men who were supposed to beat him took the final three runs of the competition.

McMorris won bronze four years ago at the Sochi Games when slopestyle made its Olympic debut.

The Gerards have to be the most relatable family of the Olympics thus far.

Gerard gave Team USA not only its first gold medal but the first medal of the 2018 Winter Games. Bach asked, referencing that Gerard's first two runs were 43- and 46-point duds. The 18-year-old, who is representing the Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation, became the first competitor to shatter a world record at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Another ice warning for Cornwall
A status yellow warning, issued by Met Éireann , says strong winds with gusts up to 110 kph are possible from 3pm this Saturday. Tomorrow will be a colder and brighter day for many with spells of sunshine. "Snow will settle on higher ground".

"I think a unified one is stronger than two divided ones".

"It feels incredible. I'm just really happy that I got to land a run and I'm just really excited right now", Gerard added.

Just a few days prior, Gerard told the assembled press at a news conference, "I don't even know what the Olympics is". "I was able to watch Mark [McMorris, a fellow Canadian snowboarder] land the most hard run of the day, but it wasn't clean, and he was scored really low because of it".

"I don't understand all the tricks he does", Conrad Gerard said.

Canadian athletes came close, but failed to reach the podium on the first day medals were handed out in South Korea. I had a lot of fun and all I really want to do is just land runs'.

He wrapped up his winning run by stomping his board in the snow for a clean landing after a backside triple cork 1440 on his final leap. He chose off-path features on the rail and jump sections that others ignored.

Max Parrot, Mark McMorris, Tyler Nicholson and Sebastian Toutant were all among the top 12 scorers after the heats, opening up a tantalizing potential of multiple Canadian medallists in the event.
