Huw Jones says Scotland must improve further to beat Ireland

Scotland skipper John Barclay insists he is not falling for Eddie Jones' Mr Nice Guy routine. If there was, we shouldn't let that detract from a great Scotland victory.

England were heavy favourites as they made their way up to Edinburgh, but they were never at the races as the Dark Blues racked up a 25-13 win in a breathless tie at BT Murrayfield.

England's Grand Slam dreams have been ended this evening as a superb Scotland claimed the Calcutta Cup with a 25-13 win in Murrayfield.

Scotland were excellent and fully deserved their win over England at Murrayfield on the weekend.

The only other time it happened was in last year's Six Nations Grand Slam decider when, having already wrapped up the title, England were suffocated by Ireland at the Aviva Stadium. Given that the previous defeat came in Dublin, where similar pre-match ceremonies take place in a presidential welcome and not two but three anthems are played, do England switch off? Calls were growing for the introduction of promotion and relegation in the championship, giving the likes of Georgia and Romania hope of a spot in the Northern Hemisphere jamboree.

Only a year ago, Scotland was thumped 61-21 by England at Twickenham.

England improved after the break with a converted Owen Farrell try, but Sam Underhill was shown a yellow card to inhibit hopes of a comeback as the hosts held out for a famous victory in Gregor Townsend's first Calcutta Cup fixture as head coach. They relied on penalties that day but this was a different story altogether.

Jones, a star in the making, kicked and regathered to ground in the 15th minute for Scotland's first home try against the English since 2004. He has 10 tries in 14 tests.

Woodward was, however, delighted to see Scotland "back in business" following a match where they scored three tries, with centre Huw Jones crossing twice and wing Sean Maitland also going over in a scintillating first half.

Scotland played well. Full marks to Scotland. "We really stuck in there and won the second half". It didn't spark a comeback, though.

"To see their faces after the game and how much it meant to means the world to all of us, but those guys that have been around for a while and had some not so good times in a Scotland shirt, it's massive for them", he added. Things seem to start going against you when you try so hard to catch up.

As it stands Ireland are the team to beat in 2018. They go to two-time defending champions England a week after that on March 17.
