Helicopter collapse in Grand Canyon causes three fatalities

A helicopter operated by a Boulder City-based tour company crashed Saturday evening in the Grand Canyon, killing three and critically injuring four, according to police.

"Three passengers are confirmed deceased and there are four level 1 trauma patients at the scene", Bradley said.

The helicopter had at least seven people on board when it crashed, FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said, citing local authorities.

A CNN affiliate relays word from witness Teddy Fujimoto, who says that the fiery condition of the helicopter's wreckage further resulted in an explosion moments after two bloodied women emerged.

FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, he added.

Bradley said rescue crews were hampered by high winds and darkness Saturday night along with rugged terrain.

National Weather Service meteorologists in Flagstaff and Phoenix said wind conditions were an estimated 10 miles per hour (16 kph) with gusts of 20 miles per hour (32 kph) around the time of the crash. People died and were horribly injured.

The helicopter was touring the area in Arizona when it crashed. He said some pilots of helicopters that were also out there chose to try descending into the gulch. "By the time they did, most of the fire was out".

Mr Fujimoto said he was left numbed by what he had seen. The pilot and five passengers were killed. "We had to learn how to market Las Vegas", he said.
