Corbyn Calls For Suffragettes to Be Pardoned One Hundred Years Later

Posthumous pardons to women arrested and detained for fighting for the vote will be considered, the Home Secretary has said.

"So I will take a look at it, but I must be frank, it is complicated because if you're going to give a legal pardon for things like arson and violence it's not as straightforward as people think it might be, but I will certainly look at proposals".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson are among those leading calls for pardons.

She noted major advances in the rights of women and other minorities since 1918, but warned of a new tone of "bitterness and agression" in public debate.

Campaigns for women's rights, including the right to vote, started around the mid-19th century, after Mary Smith delivered the first women's suffrage petition to parliament in 1832.

"This is important to Rochdale because there were many people from Rochdale who were in the suffragette movement and apparently there was once a meeting at 2 Baillie Street".

Councillor Wendy Cocks was also in attendance, she said: "As an Australian I did not want to let this day go by as in Australia we always had the privilege of equal rights and votes".

There were two wings involved in this struggle - suffragists and suffragettes. "Except that at the time that was not their priority because formal equality was not there yet", the academic said.

More than 1,000 suffragettes were arrested and numerous women were imprisoned.

He added that he will tell his hosts, "I came to tell the truth where the truth occurred - and it's not dependent on any law". Duda said Tuesday he will sign the law though he would also ask the Constitutional Tribunal to suggest possible amendments.

Britain's Suffragettes adopted militant tactics in their fight for the vote, including the use of violence.

But according to Helen Pankhurst, great-granddaughter of celebrated Suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, their peaceful campaign should not be forgotten.

What distinguishes Christabel Pankhurst's case from that of, say, Alan Turing is that he was not seeking to be arrested for being gay.

"There would have been a general acceptance that women were intellectually inferior and emotional - and women would have believed that as well as men - so they didn't have the capacity to make political judgements", she says. "It would be a fitting tribute to pardon them now", said Sam Smethers, chief executive of gender equality and women's rights charity the Fawcett Society.

On the centenary of some women over 30 achieving the right to vote, the government is facing calls to overturn the convictions of female activists jailed before the implementation of the Representation of the People Act.

Female, ethnic minority and LGBT politicians are disproportionally the targets of abuse and intimidation, she will add.

Best known as the suffragette who was fatally injured at Epsom racecourse by the king's horse, Davison had a reputation as one of the most daring champions of direct action in the WSPU. Lady Constance Lytton proved that class and image still meant something in this movement; during one spell in prison she cut her hair short, made herself admittedly "uglier" and changed her name to Jane Warton.

She said attitudes were also changing among men, particularly those who would have previously dismissed "feminist" arguments.
