Colts owner to pay for funeral of National Football League player killed in crash

The illegal immigrant suspected of killing an Indianapolis Colts player and another man in a drunken roadside crash over the weekend has been charged with a felony immigration violation, federal prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Police say Jackson, a 26-year-old linebacker with the Colts, was the passenger in an Uber when he got sick at around 4 a.m. Jackson's driver, 54-year-old Monroe pulled over in the westbound lanes of I-70 near Holt Road to help him.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nicole Alberico says 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala was convicted of a DUI in Redwood City, California, in 2005 and has numerous misdemeanor convictions and arrests in California and Indiana.

Meyer said his office prosecuted Orrego-Savala in August 2017 under the false identity of Alex Cabrera Gonsales, the same alias he gave to the Indiana State Police after being arrested for the crash Sunday. Police later said the suspect was in the US illegally and had been deported twice.

Police say the 26-year-old Jackson and 54-year-old Uber driver Jeffrey Monroe were standing outside Monroe's vehicle along I-70 when they were struck by a pickup truck that Orrego-Savala was driving. Since Orrego-Savala's fingerprints did not trigger an alert when submitted to the Indiana State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he was released after serving two days in jail, police said.

The office of Marion County prosecutor Terry Curry filed the charges Wednesday.

I just seen on my phone one of my former teammates Edwin Jackson was killed by a drunk driver.

Two years after he was deported, he returned to the United States illegally, and was deported again two months later in May 2009, with an order not to come back for 20 years, according to the complaint.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, the driver of the truck that killed Jackson and Monroe, was arrested after trying to flee the scene on foot.

"So disgraceful that a person illegally in our country killed Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson", Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

Both men were standing outside the vehicle when a black Ford F-150 pickup truck drove onto the emergency shoulder and struck them and the back of the auto.

"My prayers and best wishes are with the family of Edwin Jackson, a wonderful young man whose life was so senselessly taken", Trump tweeted.

Trump was not the only GOP politician to use Jackson's death to renew calls for increased security along the southern US border with Mexico.

Manuel Orrego-Savala, who is from Guatemala and has twice been deported from the USA, is charged with causing death while driving intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident.

Orrego-Savala remains jailed in Indianapolis. Jackson and Monroe were both pronounced dead early Sunday morning in a tragedy that has shaken the entire Colts family.

Authorities say Orrego-Savala was drunk when he hit the victims and he doesn't have a license.
