British FM to raise detained Reuters reporters case with Suu Kyi

The country's de facto leader, Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, has faced worldwide condemnation for her apparent inaction in the face of the widely alleged reports of atrocities committed against the Rohingya, which the United Nations says might amount to genocide.

The Foreign Secretary on Saturday toured a camp which is housing 500,000 refugees - equivalent to a city the size of Leicester, his office said in a statement.

The Reuters report drew on interviews with Buddhists who confessed to torching Rohingya homes, burying bodies and killing Muslims in what they said was a frenzy of violence triggered when Rohingya insurgents attacked security posts last August.

The United Nations has described the exodus of Rohingya people from Rakhine state, and the military offensive which provoked it, as a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing".

Boris Johnson has been visiting camps on the Bangladesh border that hold the refugees who fled Myanmar to escape a military crackdown.

Myanmar and Bangladesh have inked a deal to bring back refugees, but repatriation has yet to begin.

"As with other, previous reports of mass graves, this report highlights the ongoing and urgent need for Burmese authorities to cooperate with an independent, credible investigation into allegations of atrocities in northern Rakhine", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

The UK-based charity is also facing fresh accusations that its workers used prostitutes in Chad in 2006, the Observer reported. A damning internal report into their conduct concluded: "It can not be ruled out that any of the prostitutes were under-aged".

But aid agencies have expressed fears at their safety, and at the slow progress, with only 1,500 expected to return per week.

"It is vital that the Rohingya refugees must be allowed to their homes in Rakhine voluntarily, in safety and with dignity, under global oversight, and when the conditions in Burma are right", he said.

And the refugees are anxious about the conditions and their rights upon their return.

'I pay tribute to the hospitality and compassion shown by the government of Bangladesh, who are facing an enormous challenge in providing humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya community.

In his meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, the country's state counsellor, Johnson said he stressed that refugees must feel safe returning home and must be supervised by UNHCR.

Boris Johnson meets Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar's capital of Naypyitaw.

He will go on to Bangkok, Thailand, for talks with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
