Trump to attend economic forum in Davos, Switzerland

Given its elitist reputation, most presidents have not attended and Trump skipped it a year ago; his decision to go may reflect the waning influence of anti-globalists around him, notably fired chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon.

President Trump, who won election as a populist and railed against free trade agreements, will attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the White House announced on Tuesday.

That year's gathering, which occurred around Mr Trump's inauguration, was viewed as a sign of China's ascendance at a time of growing American isolationism.

It is unusual for a United States president to attend the Swiss retreat.

Xi Jinping became the first Chinese president to attend the forum in 2017, when Mr Trump was represented by Anthony Scaramucci, who later served a brief and explosive tenure as Mr Trump's White House communications director.

In a statement, Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, said: "The president welcomes opportunities to advance his America First agenda with world leaders", Sanders said.

US President Donald Trump reportedly plans to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, an annual January get-together of the global business elite.

In a separate statement, Klaus Schwab, the founder of the forum, said Trump would offer a "direct perspective" on the U.S.'s priorities and that the president would be accompanied by key Cabinet ministers and US lawmakers.

"This is very much an "America First" agenda".

The first sitting U.S. president to appear in the Swiss resort was Bill Clinton in 2000, at the forum's 30th-anniversary session. Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama never made the trip, but sent top aides on their behalf.
