Pakistan can survive without taking financial assistance from US: Khawaja Asif

The news agency cited two congressional aides as saying the US administration has been informing members of Congress that it will announce plans to cut off "security assistance" to Pakistan, although it was not clear how much or what type of assistance would be cut or for how long. "Pakistan has played a double game for years", Haley told reporters.

The Haqqani Network operates in Afghanistan from safe havens across the border in Pakistan, targeting US-led global coalition forces. "That game is not acceptable to this administration". Overall, the US gave Pakistan around $67 billion in aid between 1951 and 2011, according to the Center for Global Development, a think tank based in Washington, D.C.

He said the war in Afghanistan can not be fought in Pakistan and "we need to find a peaceful solution to the issue".

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's office said Islamabad will remain committed to playing a constructive role toward an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process despite "unwarranted allegations".

The minister said Washinton and New Dehli believe the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project was posing threats to their interests.

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools", he wrote.

The White House said last week the United States will not be paying Pakistan $255 million in foreign military assistance from a package set aside for the one-time ally for 2016 -- it had been held back earlier in 2017 and then cleared -- before it was finally withheld.

Trump seeks $18 billion to extend border wall over 10 years
At one point during his campaign, Trump estimated it would cost $10 billion for the entire 2,000-mile border, NBC News reports. The requests complicate already strained negotiations between Republicans and Democrats.

Washington has long accused Pakistan, especially its security institutions, of turning ignoring or covertly helping the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani terrorist network to stage cross-border attacks against Afghan and USA -led forces.

Foreign Minister Asif held both the USA and India responsible for the prevailing unrest in the region, saying that the "instability in the region suits both the U.S. and India".

Asif added that all financial aid from the United States had been "properly audited" and that "services [were] rendered".

"There is a nexus between the United States and India, they share the same stakes", Asif said, adding that "the U.S. wants to use India like they used Pakistan in the past, or maybe a step further".

"[Trump's tweet] is a positive message for us, should USA pressure on Pakistan increase", Mohib added.

"There are considerable risks for the USA because Pakistan could retaliate in ways that would be very problematic for US regional interests", he said, such as curtailing intelligence co-operation and USA supply lines into Afghanistan. "The worldwide community should acknowledge that", Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told reporters here on Tuesday.

The committee, in a statement issued by the prime minister's office, did not name Trump but spoke of "deep disappointment" at a slew of critical comments coming from USA officials over the past few months. It was in the Pakistani town of Abbottabad where Usama bin Laden hid until U.S. Navy SEALS killed him in 2011.
