Nine people reported killed in clashes as protests continue across Iran

Ten people were reported killed Monday in the most deadly night of violence since protests began in the second city Mashhad on Thursday.

"Iran is failing at every level despite the awful deal made with them by the Obama Administration", he wrote, adding that the Iranian people were "hungry for food & for freedom". Along with human rights, the wealth of Iran is being looted.

Six protesters were killed in clashes with security forces as they tried to storm a police station in the town of Qahderijan, which has a population of around 30,000. The death of the officer is the first fatality among security forces struggling to contain five days of unrest which is challenging the county's clerical leadership.

US President Donald Trump has used the protests to repeatedly bash the Iranian government and warned it against any human rights abuses, building on his crusade against the 2015 nuclear deal that Iran signed with world powers under Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama.

The highest-ranking United States official's direct expression of support for rioters in recent protests in Iran and the supportive voices by a number of other governments and Western media outlets reveal that the USA had plans for inciting a sedition inside Iran, Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri said on Monday.

President Hassan Rouhani acknowledged the public's anger over the Islamic Republic's flagging economy, though he and others warned that the government wouldn't hesitate to crack down on those it considers lawbreakers.

Pointing to a humiliating defeat that enemies suffered in their recent attempts to hijack the peaceful rallies in Iran, the general said the evil American and Zionist plots against the Islamic Republic have been hatched while the U.S. itself saw various public protests against Washington's policies and measures in 2017. More than 400 people have been arrested in the protests, AFP said.

"This is nothing", Mr Rouhani said.

Dangerously cold wind chills
That'll be short lived, however, because Wednesday another push of cold air moves in sending us close to double digits below zero. Skies will be clear, the breezes will be biting, and the temperatures and the wind chills will both be bitterly cold.

Brigadier-General Esmail Kowsari reportedly told the ISNA news agency: "If people came into the streets over high prices, they should not have chanted those slogans and burned public property and cars".

"We regret the loss of life that has occurred in the protests in Iran, and call on all concerned to refrain from violence and for worldwide obligations on human rights to be observed", he said. Iranians were hoping for improved living conditions following the nuclear deal and the lifting of some global sanctions.

Rohani has criticized Trump for his tweets, saying he "has forgotten that he had called Iranian people "terrorists" a few months ago".

State media began showing some footage of the demonstrations on Sunday, focusing on young men attacking banks and vehicles, an attack on a town hall in Tehran, and images of a man burning the Iranian flag.

There have been reminders of the continued support for the regime among conservative sections of society, with pro-government students staging counterdemonstrations at the University of Tehran over the weekend.

Some unconfirmed reports on social media have stated that the city was also briefly occupied by anti-government protesters.

Meanwhile, Bahrain became the first Arab Gulf state to issue a travel warning for Iran. Others have targeted the country's religious establishment.

Iran's intelligence ministry released a statement saying "instigators" have been identified "and will be dealt with seriously soon".
