MI couple wanted in death of 4-year-old arrested in Georgia

Federal authorities are joining police in southern MI in the search for a couple after a 4-year-old girl was found dead New Year's Day with "severe burns".

According to police, they are searching for 24-year-old Candice Diaz and 28-year-old Brad Fields.

Barrett was found with burns all over her body and showed signs of other abuse in her Sumpter Township home on New Year's Day.

Officers arrived and found the girl's family members administering CPR, police said.

The girl was rushed to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

A medical examiner ruled the child's death a homicide with evidence of multiple traumatic injuries and battered-child syndrome, meaning she suffered multiple injuries, at multiple sites, at multiple ages.

Diaz told cops Fields punched her and smashed her phone before turning the gun on himself and blowing a whole in his leg, shouting "see if you can outrun these bullets", according to the report.

Police say an arrest warrant has been approved for Diaz and Fields on the charges of felony murder, second degree murder, first degree child abuse and torture.

The couple was arrested Tuesday afternoon off I-75 in Lake Park.

Currently, US Marshals are offering a reward of up to $5000 leading to the arrest of Candice Diaz and Brad Fields. She pleaded guilty to weapons charges and received probation.

The couple's infant daughter is in the custody of Child Protective Services.

No one from CPS was immediately available for comment. "She was just an outgoing kid", she said.

Brad Fields, 28, faces murder, child abuse and torture charges in the death of Gabrielle Barrett on January 1, 2018.

"We didn't know. We would have gone" and removed her from the home, he said.
