IMA strike: Hospital Services affect in Odisha

IMA called on Indian doctors and nurses to suspend routine services for 12 hours on Tuesday to protest against a bill that seeks to replace the Medical Council of India with a new body.

Healthcare services at many private hospitals in the country are expected to be hit due to the shutdown.

However, operation theatres, casualty and other emergency services will continue. Therefore, about 3 lakh doctors from the private and government hospital of the country will be on strike today.

Terming the Bill as "anti-people and anti-patient", the association in a statement has stated that the Bill purported to eradicate corruption is "designed to open the floodgates of corruption".

The man has been arrested on charges of unlawfully carrying a weapon and trespassing, according to KHOU Houston . Earlier this year, a man shot dead 58 people from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, Las Vegas.

While the doctors at the state-run medical colleges made a decision to keep away from the Out Patient Department for an hour from 8-9 a.m. and at the state-run hospitals from 9-10 a.m., in many private hospitals the protests would continue till 6 p.m. Doctors protested in parts of Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Odisha, as well. Tabled in Parliament by Federal Health Minister JP Nadda last week, it gives practitioners of Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy green light to practise modern medicine and prescribe allopathic drugs after attending a "bridge" course. The protests come as the Bill is set to be taken up for discussion in Parliament on Tuesday. The IMA called the move anti-people.

Condemning the NMC Bill of 2017 Tandon also said: "This is basically not the National Medical Commission but a local medical commission". Otherwise the government has fixed the fee of 85 percent of seats in private medical colleges. He also said the talks with the striking doctors were going on.

Medical practitioners from the city are geared up for another protest to show solidarity with the nationwide bandh called by the Indian Medical Association to protest against the National Medical Council Amendment Act.

Tandon also said: "The NMC proposes two registers - one for the urban and the other for the ones who have undertaken the bridge course".
