Fromer Sabres Captain Brian Gionta headlines US Olympic Team

Troy Terry has been named to the U.S. Olympic team set to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea from February 9 - Feb. 25, USA Hockey announced on Monday.

Also named among the one goaltender, eight defensemen and 14 forwards were former Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski, who last played an National Hockey League game in the 2015-16 season; former Nashville defenseman Jon Blum of Rancho Santa Margarita, who is playing in Russia's KHL; and 20-year-old Ducks forward prospect Troy Terry of the University of Denver.

The selection will take place live at the Citi Field stadium in New York City at 1pm local time during the second interval of the NHL Winter Classic, which sees the New York Rangers face the Buffalo Sabres.

Team USA opens the competition Wednesday, Feb. 14 against Slovenia.

The U.S. women have not won Olympic gold since the women's game made its debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan. The United States certainly won't be the only team affected by the NHL's lack of participation in the Olympics, but they have undoubtedly been hit as hard as anybody. "(We have) some younger, college guys, which I'm sure will bring a lot of skill and energy, then proven AHL players that can produce, as well.

Tony Granato, who played in the 1988 Olympics and coaches at Wisconsin, will be behind the bench in Pyeongchang, South Korea, as the US seeks its first Olympic gold medal since the 1980 "Miracle On Ice" team. Since 1998, the US has won three silver medals (2002, 2010, 2014) and one bronze medal (2006).

Ryan Zapolski, who plays for Jokerit in the Kontinental Hockey League, is the only goaltender on the roster so far, with two more to be added later in January.

He was a student at Mercyhurst College from 2007 to 2011 where he played NCAA Division I college hockey for the school. Gionta, the former Buffalo Sabres captain from Rochester, will be joined on the men's team by Sabres prospect Will Borgen.

Team USA began pre-Olympic play on October 22, going 5-1 out of the gate before losing four straight games -two decided in overtime - to perennial rival Canada, the four-time defending Olympic champion. Ten Gophers have represented the U.S.in the Olympics, and two Finnish Gophers, Noora Räty and Mira Jalusuo, have competed for their native Finland.
