WhatsApp to End BlackBerry OS and Windows Phone Support on December 31

WhatsApp is dropping support for a number of outdated platforms in a bid to focus on iOS and Android - mobile platforms used by a majority of users out there. The messaging app will drop support for "BlackBerry OS", "BlackBerry 10", "Windows Phone 8.0" and older platforms, from December 31, 2017, according to an express.co.uk report published on Monday.

As per the blog as no more development work is being done actively for these phone platforms so there are chances that some features might stop functioning at any time.

"These platforms don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future". A while back the company also stopped supporting the Symbian operating system which was once the pride of Finnish phone maker Nokia.

This includes Android running OS 4.0 or above, iPhone running iOS 7 or above, or Windows Phone 8.1 or above. However users should still be able to use WhatsApp on these platforms after the cut-off date.

WhatsApp is officially pulling the plug on Windows Phone 8.0 (and older) and BlackBerry OS, at the end of this year. The Apple App Store was only a few months old.

It also said there was now no option to transfer people's chat history between platforms.

Users of Nokia's S40 mobile operating system can continue to use WhatsApp until the end of 2018, and users of older phones running Android 2.3.7 down to Android 2.3.3 until February 1, 2020. However, we provide the option to send your chat history attached to an email. However surprising it may seem, there are still many Windows Phone handsets out there alive and breathing fine whose users will be unable to communicate with their friends and family. BlackBerry OS has been around for over two decades now, running on devices like BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve, and was succeeded by BlackBerry 10 in 2013.
