Unemployment rate rises slightly in province

That bumped up the provincial jobless rate to 5.4 per cent from 5.2 per cent in October. The last time the national rate was this low, the global financial crisis hadn't yet happened. Across the province, 18,000 more people were employed in November, up 3.8 per cent in year-over-year gains, mostly in full-time work.

The slowdown marks the end of a rally for the Canadian economy that had, until now, lead its peers in the Group of Seven industrialized nations (G7).

The figure was close to the 1.6 percent growth analysts were expecting, after a rate of 4.3 percent (revised down from 4.5 percent) was posted in the previous period. "It was the largest monthly increase in more than five years, and marked the 12th consecutive gain - an unusual streak that speaks of durability", said Sal Guatieri, senior economist with Bank of Montreal Capital Markets, in a research note.

"If that trend holds up it will be hard for the Bank of Canada to remain on the sidelines much longer", he wrote in a note.

Canada gained 29,600 full-time and 49,900 part-time jobs in November across the country. Another 2,100 were unemployed last month, according to Statistic Canada's labour force survey. StatsCan reported on Friday that the economy grew 0.4 per cent in the third quarter of this year, less than half the 1-per-cent growth seen the quarter before.

November's unemployment rate was the lowest November unemployment rate since comparable statistics started being recorded in 2001. The increase in real gross domestic product was driven by a four per cent expansion, at an annual rate, in household spending.

Investment in residential structures fell for a second-straight quarter - the first time since early 2013 that the category saw a decrease in two straight quarters.
