This weekend: Supermoon. Coming soon: Blue moon

The moon will become totally full on Sunday, and will be visible in the New York City sky between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Supermoon is the term given to the moon when it's two cycles around the earth match up.

The difference is noticeable for close observers - particularly if the moon is near the horizon, where it can be compared with terrestrial landmarks.

At different stages in the moon's orbit around the earth it will be closer to us or further away.

The moon will appear to be about 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter. This Sunday's supermoon will appear a little tiresome in comparison, only appearing seven percent larger and 16 percent brighter.

The Moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth's atmosphere. For people of the Northern hemisphere, the December full moon is called as a cold moon.

But the astronomer warned that as use of the nickname "supermoon" grows, so do expectations.

It'll be almost full Saturday night with clear skies for viewing.

While the moon is undoubtedly both bigger and brighter than usual, our eyes tend to trick us into seeing the moon as larger than it truly is. Even more so if it's a supermoon.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officials had said that supermoon was seen 70 years ago however, the force of attraction was the strongest resulting in high tides than usual. "Some people perceive the rising moon as twice as large...", said Paranjpye.

This optical illusion also occurs when watching the supermoon immediately after sunset (or before sunrise).

When is this weekend's supermoon?

It'll be full again on Sunday night, but you'll have to be more patient trying to get a good look at it.
