The world's biggest Starbucks just opened in China

Starbucks is opening a new 30,000-square foot, high-end Reserve Roastery in China.

It's also the largest Starbucks in the world, spanning an area almost twice as large as the next biggest, a Roastery in Seattle that opened three years ago.

Starbucks dominates in China and is growing fast in the market, while in the USA it comes under pressure from a "third wave" of boutique coffee sellers and cheaper rivals.

Starbucks opened its first Reserve Roastery in its home city Seattle in 2014.

An augmented reality app is used in the new Starbucks Roastery in Shanghai, China.

Starbucks announced it would expand its investment in China in July 2017 by sealing its biggest deal: the company planned to acquire the remaining 50% of its East China joint venture in a $1.3 billion transaction.

As customers enter the new Roastery, they are greeted by the sight of a two-story, copper cask, adorned with more than 1,000 traditional Chinese chops (or stamps) that have been hand-engraved to narrate the story of Starbucks and coffee.

No matter how many Starbucks stores you've been to, you've definitely never seen one like this.

In a sign of the times, Starbucks partnered with Chinese tech giant Alibaba to aggressively promote the Shanghai store opening online. Starbucks Roastery stores are the company's new upscale coffeehouses in major metros.

Here's what it's like to visit the Shanghai Roastery, the most over-the-top Starbucks in the world.

In 2012, Starbucks China has operated the China Starbucks Farmer Support Center in Pu'er in the Yunnan Province, supplying agronomists to work in concert with government representatives and local farmers to improve quality and production through the region.

But despite all of Shanghai Roastery's features, it's still a coffee shop at heart.

Schultz said the company wanted to bring its most premium store location ever to Shanghai because it's one of the world's most dynamic retail destinations as well as a "gateway to customers from across Asia and the world". Starbucks already operates more than 3,000 stores in the country and 2,000 more by 2021.

Shares of Starbucks have risen 5.8 percent this year.
