Syria army intercepts Israel missiles near Damascus

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of the attack.

A military site near Damascus came under attack just after midnight Saturday by missiles from the Israeli military, according to the Syrian state-run SANA news agency and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR).

An Iranian military base was struck around 12:30 a.m. near the city of Al-Kiswa, about eight miles southwest of the capital, the Syrian Arab News Agency said.

This follows a row of seemingly random attacks on Syria by the hostile Israeli Defense Forces, which often target positions near the Golan Heights but have since expanded their operating territory to attack more high-value targets.

Israeli missiles attacked a military position near Damascus overnight and Syria's air defense system thwarted them, Syrian state television said on Saturday.

The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Syria.

However, some of the missiles hit their intended target, causing loud explosions near the towns of Kesweh and Sahnaya, the source further added. The BBC published what it said were satellite images that it had commissioned that showed construction activity at the site between January and October this year. "Arms convoys in particular have been singled out by the Israeli air force". The report was based on intelligence from "Western security sources", the report said.

Hizballah fought a war with Israel in 2006. In short, the BBC spread what it acknowledged to be a mere "claim" based exclusively on an unnamed "Western intelligence source". Israel has not confirmed that attack either.
