Power outages at Atlanta's busy airport grounding some flights

Delta, which has its hub in Atlanta, canceled nearly 400 flights Monday, per CNN.

Robert Mann, an aviation consultant and former American Airlines executive, said Delta would likely have to wait until today for its operations in Atlanta to return to normal.

It has been a very hard day for thousands of travelers, and while Chick-fil-A is always closed on Sunday, our restaurants open occasionally to serve communities in need.

Chick-fil-A made the rare gesture of opening on a Sunday to deliver more than 5,000 meals to stranded passengers, according to the airport's Twitter page.

Frontier: A Frontier spokesman said agents will be calling passengers to give them an option to pick up their luggage at the airport or having their bags shipped to them.

After staying in a hotel Sunday night, he returned to the airport in the morning. He said it's unknown how the fire was started but there is no evidence to suggest it was caused deliberately.

Officials said the intensity and location of the fire cut off primary and backup power.

"When the power goes out in one of the world's biggest airports. yikes!"

Despite its relatively low profile, ATL is the busiest airport in the world, and this tweet illustrates the effect the outage had on sky traffic across the globe. As soon as the scene cooled, they (Georgia Power) got to working.

Delta canceled almost 400 flights today and 1,000 flights Sunday after the power outage in Atlanta.

The Atlanta airport lost power Sunday across concourses and terminals affecting all airlines.

All outgoing flights, and arriving planes were held on the ground at their point of departure.

The airport recommends passengers check with their individual airlines for flight information. Only a handful of flights have been canceled for Monday morning. CNN also reported one concourse was evacuated due to what was described as a bad smell.

Some 80 to 100 planes got stuck on the tarmac, as powerless gates became unusable. That report was unconfirmed, and Georgia Power said it was working with airport authorities to determine the cause of the outage.

To provide additional flexibility, Customers who are scheduled to travel to/from/through ATL on Sunday or Monday, December 17 or 18, and want to alter their travel plans may rebook in the original class of service or travel standby (within 14 days of their original date of travel between the original city-pairs and in accordance with our accommodation procedures) without paying any additional charge. It is raining in the Atlanta area, but it is not known if the weather played a role in the outage. Escalators and elevators were also affected, but no word if anyone was stuck in an elevator.

Hartsfield-Jackson handles 2,500 flights and an average of 275,000 passengers daily, according to its website.
