It's here: Amazon finally launches in Australia

One of Australia's leading retailers, Gerry Harvey of Harvey Norman told Sunrise that he's concerned Amazon will "break all the rules" and employ a predatory pricing strategy that means businesses such as his were financially incapable of matching their heavily discounted items.

"From today, customers across Australia can visit and shop from millions of products across more than 20 categories with benefits such as everyday low prices and fast delivery options", the company announced.

Analysts remain split over whether Amazon will open a warehouse in New Zealand.

In a statement on Tuesday, Amazon said it would offer free delivery on "eligible" orders over $49, and one-day delivery in some regions.

Amazon Australia at launch has a pretty good range including Chromebooks from $289.23 for the Asus C202SA which should make everyone a bit happier about Chromebook availability in Australia.

Online shopping only accounts for between 8-13% of total sales in Australia, leaving room for growth in a sector estimated to be worth more than AUS$300 billion (RM923 billion) annually.

He said Amazon's key strength in the U.S. is the fact its strategy is driven by data, not gut feel, which is a key source of the marketplace. "The Aussie retailers breathe a sigh of relief as they realise that the range is terrible and the prices are exactly the same".

Australia has always been home to Amazon-registered sellers, but until Tuesday they were limited to sending goods offshore because the Seattle conglomerate did not have a warehouse in the country of 24 million people. "However, we see that the good-quality large retailers are likely to survive or even thrive in the face of Amazon". Amazon also sells its own brand of accessories like cables.

"Over time, we will create thousands of new jobs and invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Australia", said Braeuniger.

Amazon Marketplace connects customers to millions of products and helps sellers reach more than 300 million active customers worldwide, the company said.

"Focusing on customers and the long-term are key principles in Amazon's approach to retailing", said Rocco Braeuniger, Country Manager of Amazon Australia.
