Germany's SPD's Schulz Says He Hasn't Given Green Light for Coalition

However the SPD is wary of continuing as a junior partner to Merkel since it suffered its worst result ever in September's election.

SPD representatives subsequently told press that Schulz informed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Chancellor Angela Merkel and CSU leader Horst Seehofer on Thursday that no coalition talks could take place prior to the upcoming SPD party conference next week.

"I can completely repudiate the rumor that any green light has been given", Schulz said.

Commenting on the SDP's possible coalition with the Conservatives, Schulz has stated that it is not "automatic", adding that the party would discuss alternatives at a meeting next week.

Merkel's camp said the ball was in the SPD's court.

"The fact that we underlined today that we are prepared to enter such talks with the SPD shows that we're aiming to bring these talks to a successful conclusion", he added.

The youth branch of the SPD is organising a petition which rejects a third grand coalition under Merkel and advocates that the centre-left should tolerate a Christian Democrat minority government instead. French President Emmanuel Macron has offered some important ideas: a European finance minister; Eurobonds to finance a new European investment program; more emphasis on innovation; a financial transactions tax to fund increased aid to Africa, where Europe has a strategic interest in long-term development; and tax harmonization more generally, before the US triggers a global race to the bottom on taxing corporations and the rich.

"Giving Emmanuel Macron a positive answer will be a key element in every negotiation with the SPD", Schulz was quoted as saying in the interview made available on Friday, adding that he also backed a joint European Union tax policy.
