Atlantic Hurricane Season Was the Busiest Since 2005

November 30th means the end of Hurricane Season - and for those in Florida, Puerto Rico and nations across the Atlantic Ocean, it couldn't end soon enough. With maximum winds of almost 300 kilometers an hour, Irma destroyed the Caribbean island of Barbuda, shredded vast sections of the Virgin Islands and knocked out power in much of Florida. We hit all three, with 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes, and six major hurricanes.

Kislin reported that now, in the months following Hurricane Irma, "the island is just about back to normal". Hurricanes Nate and Tropical Storms Cindy and Harvey made landfall in Louisiana this year. It was the 10th most intense Atlantic storm by barometric pressure. "Especially during the month of September, we were constantly on the move flying not only hurricanes, but multiple category 4 and 5 storms".

On September 20, the storm made landfall in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, as a Category 4 hurricane with winds up to 155 miles per hour.

This year was the most expensive hurricane season on record. That includes at least $32 billion in damages from Maria, $60 billion from Irma and $114 from Harvey.

The storm maintained an intensity of 185 mph for a global record of 37 hours, and it was also the strongest hurricane on record in the Atlantic, outside of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea.

The DDM said the impacts from the three unprecedented weather events combined will result in the costliest year in terms of hazard impacts for the BVI, and the first time that deaths have resulted from the impact of hurricanes.

This year, not only did we have 10 hurricanes, but they occurred sequentially, tying the record for greatest number of hurricanes in a row.

On October 8th, Hurricane Nate made landfall as a category one storm near Biloxi, MS. "The highest wind gust reported in our area was 58 miles per hour in Oconee Co., and the highest rain total was 6.05" in Yancey Co., NC. We also saw 7 tropical storms mostly at the beginning and end of the season.

"Throughout this devastating hurricane season, NOAA provided vital forecasts and data that helped save many lives". "Overall, both withstood the storm considering the damage to other areas of the Caribbean".

"There are still ways and methods [the Hurricane Center] can improve upon, so the public can understand a bit easier because if you're not in this field, you don't practice this, you don't see this every day, you can get confused", said Dr. Spearo.
