Commission on opioid addiction asks Trump to declare national emergency on overdoses

Heroin, police officers find, is often laced with fentanyl, a powerful opioid that has been blamed for many overdose deaths.

President Trump is being urged to declare a federal state of emergency to address the epidemic of opioid overdoses that is claiming as many American lives as the terrorist attacks on 9/11 every three weeks.

A White House statement said the administration will "immediately" begin reviewing the panel's recommendations.

The interim report's recommendations are not meant to be comprehensive; the commission is scheduled to release its final report in October. Over the next several weeks, the commission plans to travel the country and meet with state leaders and federal departments to map out long-term plans to systemically address the crisis. The recommendation also aims to provide legislation that would create naloxone dispensary stations as well as distribute the drug alongside "high-risk opioid prescriptions". "Declare a national emergency under either the Public Health Service Act or the Stafford Act", the committee wrote in an interim report released yesterday. That is more than two-thirds of all drug overdose deaths.

"With approximately 142 Americans dying every day, America is enduring a death toll equal to September 11 every three weeks", the report reads. Here is an excerpt of the Commission's recommendations to President Trump.

The 32-year-old Venezuelan has won the event each of the last two years, which represent two of his three career PGA victories. World number one Dustin Johnson completed a strong showing with a five-under 67 - his fourth consecutive round in the 60s.

In a letter to the president, the commission details recommendations that would bring millions of dollars in funding to help implement a national response to the United States opioid crisis.

Christie, who has made combating the abuse in New Jersey his top priority in his final year in office, drew on his own experience as chief executive and is recommending Trump adopt some of the ideas he's put into action here. It wants the federal government to launch prescriber education initiatives, which would make it easier for states to allow doctors to treat opioid addiction with naloxone, which reverses opioid overdoses.

Among the other recommendations in the interim report were to rapidly increase treatment capacity for those who need substance abuse help; to establish and fund better access to medication-assisted treatment programs; and to make sure that health care providers are aware of the potential for misuse and abuse of prescription opioids by enhancing prevention efforts at medical and dental schools.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, participated by phone from the Outer Banks, where a cut power line forced a mass evacuation.

They also call for funding for drug-monitoring programmes, in order to ensure that patients are not stockpiling their medication or reselling it. 'We know you care deeply about this issue. The Commission looks forward to submitting its final report. "These law enforcement officials and prosecutors, they know it doesn't do a whole lot of good to have these people sitting in jails". Governor Charlie Baker of MA was not able to join Christie, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, former Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy and Professor Bertha Madras, Ph.D. on the call but the members present voted unanimously to move their report forward.
